What is the name of this book?

I read this book in about 1988. It centres around 2 girls. One lives in a sterile middle class English environment where her mum cooks dinner parties from recipes in a little plastic box, all neat and tidy. The other apparently lives in a fantastic large house with a mum who cooks French cuisine with bloody animals ready to be turned into wonderful gourmet food.
It transpires that the latter girl is lying about her life.
It was a really interesting book, but I cannot remember the author or the title.
Any ideas ?
